Books & Booze: If Beale Street Could Talk

Posman Books

In this honest and stunning novel, now a major motion picture directed by Barry Jenkins, James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice. Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin’s story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions–affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche.

On February 19th, Join us for a discussion of If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin at The City Winery.

LIVESTREAM: How to Get a Job at a Startup

Fast growing startups have arguably become the most attractive places to work. They provide almost unprecedented pathways for personal growth, autonomy, impact, and even the opportunity to become wealthy. But breaking into the startup world can often seem frustrating and confusing.

Topics we will cover

  • What exactly is a startup and when is it advantageous (or not) to work at one
  • All the startup jargon you’re too afraid to ask about
  • What are the most popular roles
  • Disclaimers, pitfalls, and things to watch out for
  • Cultural differences and what to prepare for
  • 5 tried and true steps for landing a startup job

What will the remote learning experience be like?

  • Ask questions and interact with peers and expert instructors — all in real time. Collaborate via live chat, voice, and video.
  • Gain accountability and guidance from your instructor and fellow classmates to help you turn skills into career success.

Preparation

  • A laptop is required for this workshop with Excel installed (any version 2007 or newer on PC and any version 2016 or newer on Mac)
  • For those on Windows, you’ll need Microsoft Windows 7/8/10 (32- or 64-bit). For those with Macs, you’ll need the Mac OS X 10.8.5 or higher, up to 10.11.4 (El Capitan). Upgrade your operating system before class, if needed.
  • Strong internet connection.
