Please join us at the Spalding Nix Fine Art Pop-Up at Ponce City Market for a “Collecting 101” presentation by Spalding Nix as he reveals his eight “rules” for collecting art as well as the best ways to get the most out of the sale of your collection. Established in 2003, Spalding Nix Fine Art highlights the best of contemporary art from abstract artists like Katherine Sandoz and Spencer Sloan to more traditional realists like Richard Thomas Scott and Sarah Lamb. The gallery hosts five shows a year, as well as Artist Talks and events. As an Accredited Member of the American Society of Appraisers, Mr. Nix provides valuation services for donation, estate, insurance and litigation-related purposes. As an art adviser, Mr. Nix assists clients in navigating the art world by offering confidential and objective advice in the acquisition or sale of fine and decorative art. This event is free and open to the public!

Our essential shirt is a great beginner sewing class, introducing you to the world of garment sewing. In this 4-hour class you will learn to sew and make our Topstitch Essential Shirt pattern. You will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how to use them, learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn how to cut out your pattern, learn the basics of understanding seam allowance, straight stitching and sewing along curves. We’ll provide the pattern and specific instructions and guide you along the way to make a the shirt. It is a boxy, kimono sleeved pullover. With no fitting challenges and no fiddly closures, it’s a perfect intro project. The pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Please bring 1.5 yards of pre-washed fabric to class. It is best suited for fabrics such as cotton lawn, double gauze, voile or linen. NOTE: Fabric can shrink after washing so you may want a little more than 1.5 yds especially if your fabric has a width less than 50″. Ask a staff member if you’re unsure about your fabric shrinkage.

Skills you will learn: The skills you will learn in the class are how to understand a sewing machine, the concept of seam allowance and how to sew to a particular seam allowance, how to pin and cut fabric, how to sew in a straight line and how to sew curves.

Skills expected: None, just an open mind!

Materials needed: 1.5 yards of pre-washed fabric such as cotton lawn, double gauze, voile or linen.

In this class you will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how to use them, learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. The serger is often what sets homemade-looking garments apart from beautifully handmade garments. Learn the art of finishing your garment with a serger. In this class you will learn all the basics of the serger, including learning the parts of the serger, how to thread the machine, clean it, understand tension and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn various stitches and then sew a pair of leggings.

The Virginia leggings are a great intro to knits in conjunction with the serger. Leggings are a wardrobe staple, excellent as casual lounge pants or easily dressed up depending on your fabric choice. Pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Your fabric will need to have 40% stretch. You will need 1 & 1/2 yards of fabric for all sizes if your fabric is 60″ wide; 2 & 1/2 if you fabric is 45″ wide.

Skills taught: The skills you will learn in this class are an understanding of using sergers, how to thread the serger and troubleshoot common issues, how to sew stretch fabrics, sewing a waistband, serging seams.

Skills expected: You’ve taken one of our intro to sewing classes or have equivalent experience. You have some basic garment sewing experience and know how to read a sewing pattern. You know how to thread and use a sewing machine. You’ve sewn within the last 2 years. You will not be taught to sew in this class so please be sure you already know how to sew!

Materials needed: Fabric. You will need 1 & 1/2 yards of fabric for all sizes if your fabric is 60″ wide; 2 & 1/2 if you fabric is 45″ wide. Fabric should have 40% stretch.

Topstitch Beginner Class: Essential Shirt @ Topstitch

Our essential shirt is a great beginner sewing class, introducing you to the world of garment sewing. In this 4-hour class you will learn to sew and make our Topstitch Essential Shirt pattern. You will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how to use them, learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn how to cut out your pattern, learn the basics of understanding seam allowance, straight stitching and sewing along curves. We’ll provide the pattern and specific instructions and guide you along the way to make a the shirt. It is a boxy, kimono sleeved pullover. With no fitting challenges and no fiddly closures, it’s a perfect intro project. The pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Please bring 1.5 yards of pre-washed fabric to class. It is best suited for fabrics such as cotton lawn, double gauze, voile or linen. NOTE: Fabric can shrink after washing so you may want a little more than 1.5 yds especially if your fabric has a width less than 50″. Ask a staff member if you’re unsure about your fabric shrinkage.

Skills you will learn: The skills you will learn in the class are how to understand a sewing machine, the concept of seam allowance and how to sew to a particular seam allowance, how to pin and cut fabric, how to sew in a straight line and how to sew curves.

This fold-over, zippered clutch is a great intro to sewing project! In this class you will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how to use them, learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. You’ll also learn how to cut and pin fabric, learn the basics of understanding seam allowance, straight stitching, sewing curves and corners, and inserting a zipper. The serger is often what sets homemade-looking garments apart from beautifully handmade garments. Learn the art of finishing your garment with a serger. In this class you will learn all the basics of the serger, including learning the parts of the serger, how to thread the machine, clean it, understand tension and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn various stitches and then sew a pair of leggings.

The Virginia leggings are a great intro to knits in conjunction with the serger. Leggings are a wardrobe staple, excellent as casual lounge pants or easily dressed up depending on your fabric choice. Pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Your fabric will need to have 40% stretch. You will need 1 & 1/2 yards of fabric for all sizes if your fabric is 60″ wide; 2 & 1/2 if you fabric is 45″ wide.

Skills taught: The skills you will learn in this class are an understanding of using sergers, how to thread the serger and troubleshoot common issues, how to sew stretch fabrics, sewing a waistband, serging seams.

Skills expected: You’ve taken one of our intro to sewing classes or have equivalent experience. You have some basic garment sewing experience and know how to read a sewing pattern. Our essential shirt is a great beginner sewing class, introducing you to the world of garment sewing. In this 4-hour class you will learn to sew and make our Topstitch Essential Shirt pattern. You will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how to use them, learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn how to cut out your pattern, learn the basics of understanding seam allowance, straight stitching and sewing along curves. We’ll provide the pattern and specific instructions and guide you along the way to make a the shirt. It is a boxy, kimono sleeved pullover. With no fitting challenges and no fiddly closures, it’s a perfect intro project. The pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Please bring 1.5 yards of pre-washed fabric to class. It is best suited for fabrics such as cotton lawn, double gauze, voile or linen. NOTE: Fabric can shrink after washing so you may want a little more than 1.5 yds especially if your fabric has a width less than 50″. Ask a staff member if you’re unsure about your fabric shrinkage.

Pop-Up Art Talk: Spalding Nix's Collecting 101 @ Spalding Nix Pop-Up Gallery

Please join us at the Spalding Nix Fine Art Pop-Up at Ponce City Market for a “Collecting 101” presentation by Spalding Nix as he reveals his eight “rules” for collecting art as well as the best ways to get the most out of the sale of your collection. Established in 2003, Spalding Nix Fine Art highlights the best of contemporary art from abstract artists like Katherine Sandoz and Spencer Sloan to more traditional realists like Richard Thomas Scott and Sarah Lamb. The gallery hosts five shows a year, as well as Artist Talks and events. As an Accredited Member of the American Society of Appraisers, Mr. Nix provides valuation services for donation, estate, insurance and litigation-related purposes. As an art adviser, Mr. Nix assists clients in navigating the art world by offering confidential and objective advice in the acquisition or sale of fine and decorative art. This event is free and open to the public!

In this class, students will be making Cozy blue’s “summer garden”– learning essential embroidery stitches such as straight stitching, french knots, backstitch, whipped backstitch, satin stitch, lazy daisy and stem stitch. Students will also learn about various types of threads and needles and embroidery materials.

Our essential shirt is a great beginner sewing class, introducing you to the world of garment sewing. In this 4-hour class you will learn to sew and make our Topstitch Essential Shirt pattern. You will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how to use them, learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn how to cut out your pattern, learn the basics of understanding seam allowance, straight stitching and sewing along curves. We’ll provide the pattern and specific instructions and guide you along the way to make a the shirt. It is a boxy, kimono sleeved pullover. With no fitting challenges and no fiddly closures, it’s a perfect intro project. The pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Please bring 1.5 yards of pre-washed fabric to class. It is best suited for fabrics such as cotton lawn, double gauze, voile or linen. NOTE: Fabric can shrink after washing so you may want a little more than 1.5 yds especially if your fabric has a width less than 50″. Ask a staff member if you’re unsure about your fabric shrinkage.

Skills you will learn: The skills you will learn in the class are how to understand a sewing machine, the concept of seam allowance and how to sew to a particular seam allowance, how to pin and cut fabric, how to sew in a straight line and how to sew curves.

Skills expected: None, just an open mind!

This fold-over, zippered clutch is a great intro to sewing project! In this class you will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how to use them, learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. You’ll also learn how to cut and pin fabric, learn the basics of understanding seam allowance, straight stitching, sewing curves and corners, and inserting a zipper. We’ll provide the pattern to cut and specific instructions to guide you along the way to make a useful and beautiful clutch.

Skills you will learn: The skills you will learn in the class are how to understand a sewing machine, the concept of seam allowance and how to sew to a particular seam allowance, how to pin and cut fabric, how to sew in a straight line, pivot at corners & how to insert a zipper.

Skills expected: None!

The serger is often what sets homemade-looking garments apart from beautifully handmade garments. Learn the art of finishing your garment with a serger. In this class you will learn all the basics of the serger, including learning the parts of the serger, how to thread the machine, clean it, understand tension and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn various stitches and then sew a pair of leggings.

The Virginia leggings are a great intro to knits in conjunction with the serger. Leggings are a wardrobe staple, excellent as casual lounge pants or easily dressed up depending on your fabric choice. Pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Your fabric will need to have 40% stretch. You will need 1 & 1/2 yards of fabric for all sizes if your fabric is 60″ wide; 2 & 1/2 if you fabric is 45″ wide.

Skills taught: The skills you will learn in this class are an understanding of using sergers, how to thread the serger and troubleshoot common issues, how to sew stretch fabrics, sewing a waistband, serging seams.

Skills expected: You’ve taken one of our intro to sewing classes or have equivalent experience. You have some basic garment sewing experience and know how to read a sewing pattern. You know how to thread and use a sewing machine. You’ve sewn within the last 2 years. You will not be taught to sew in this class so please be sure you already know how to sew!

Materials needed: Fabric. You will need 1 & 1/2 yards of fabric for all sizes if your fabric is 60″ wide; 2 & 1/2 if you fabric is 45″ wide. Fabric should have 40% stretch.
