Books & Booze: If Beale Street Could Talk

Posman Books

In this honest and stunning novel, now a major motion picture directed by Barry Jenkins, James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice. Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin’s story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions–affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche.

On February 19th, Join us for a discussion of If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin at The City Winery.

*PLEASE RSVP THROUGH CITY WINERY’S TICKETING PAGE*
Please be aware this is going to be a First Come, First Served event.

Topstitch: Knitwear

Topstitch

Be one of the first to make Megan Nielsen’s newest knit pattern, the Jarrah! If you’re a bit intimidated to sew knit fabrics, this class is a great way to dive into knits. In this class, you’ll learn to work with knits, sew them on a regular sewing machine with a ball point needle, sew straight seams, use a serger and attach binding.

  • Skills taught: Sewing with knit fabrics, including various types of knits such as jersey and interlock knits, needle choices for sewing knits and learning to cut and sew your top.
  • Skills expected: You’ve taken one of our intro classes or have equivalent  experience. You have some basic garment sewing experience such as a pullover top or a-line skirt. You know how to thread and use a sewing machine. You’ve sewn within the last 2 years. You will not be taught to sew in this class so please be sure you already know how to sew!
  • Materials needed: Light to medium weight jersey knit fabric with 20% stretch. See the pattern yardage for your size.
  • Materials provided: The Jarrah sewing pattern, a sewing machine, coordinating thread, fabric shears, pins, marking tools, measuring tape, an iron and ironing board.

Note: To save time and space for your fellow sewists, cut your pattern out of your fabric before class.  We encourage you to contact the shop before class if you need help cutting out your fabric.
