Topstitch: Intro to Serger @ Topstitch

The serger is often what sets homemade-looking garments apart from beautifully handmade garments. Learn the art of finishing your garment with a serger. In this class you will learn all the basics of the serger, including learning the parts of the serger, how to thread the machine, clean it, understand tension and troubleshoot common issues. Once you’ve threaded the machine you’ll learn various stitches and then sew a pair of leggings.

The Virginia leggings are a great intro to knits in conjunction with the serger. Leggings are a wardrobe staple, excellent as casual lounge pants or easily dressed up depending on your fabric choice. Pattern and sewing tools included at class. Fabric not included. Your fabric will need to have 40% stretch. You will need 1 & 1/2 yards of fabric for all sizes if your fabric is 60″ wide; 2 & 1/2 if you fabric is 45″ wide.

Skills taught: The skills you will learn in this class are an understanding of using sergers, how to thread the serger and troubleshoot common issues, how to sew stretch fabrics, sewing a waistband, serging seams.

Skills expected: You’ve taken one of our intro to sewing classes or have equivalent experience. You have some basic garment sewing experience and know how to read a sewing pattern. You know how to thread and use a sewing machine. You’ve sewn within the last 2 years. You will not be taught to sew in this class so please be sure you already know how to sew!
