Books & Booze: If Beale Street Could Talk

Posman Books

In this honest and stunning novel, now a major motion picture directed by Barry Jenkins, James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice. Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin’s story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions–affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche.

On February 19th, Join us for a discussion of If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin at The City Winery.

Please be aware this is going to be a First Come, First Served event.

Topstitch Advanced Beginner: Hack It!

Topstitch

Have you ever picked up a pattern and thought, “Boy I’d love to sew this, if only the Neckline were shaped differently. Or if only the sleeves were a different style, the skirt wasn’t so curved, the bodice of this pattern was attached to the lower half of this other pattern.” In this 3-hour class, Brittani will guide you through the steps necessary to make those changes to your could-be-favorite patterns!
She will help you determine what alterations can be made to your pattern BEFORE you even cut it out! Then Brittani will guide you through making adjustments to any pattern pieces affected by your alteration. She will take a look with you at your pattern instructions and help to note how you may need to sew your garment up differently than what is advised.
*Please note that in this class, the goal of this class is to pick up the skills necessary to make adjustments to your patterns before the sewing process begins.

Skills expected: You’ve taken one of our intro to sewing classes or have the equivalent amount of experience. You must already know how to sew on a sewing machine.

Materials needed: Bring in 1-3 pattern options you’d like to re-design and the instructor will help you decide which one to tackle in class. If you have any questions or concerns about what to bring, feel free to email us.

Materials provided: Sewing machines, thread, scissors, irons, ironing boards.
